A Sterno Memorial Canoe outing and BBQ.
Friends and friends of friends: I am gauging interest in hosting a Memorial Bash / Canoe outing here at my home near the Fox River in Dundee, IL. I'm hoping for some time near Labor Day. We have plenty of room here for out of towners and over night guests and lots of room to get comfortable. ETA: I think that the Saturday before the Viceroy of India would be the best day for this as there will already be a number of people in from out of town. This would be the 26 of August. We have two canoes and tow kayaks and have a near-by place to rent more. I'm not sure how best to get the word out, but his may be a good memorial... As the date approaches, I NEED RSVPs to get a head count. efxguy | | Tuesday, August 8th, 2006 | | 7:42 pm |
Goodbye, my friend.
Well, Sterno left us theis afternoon and I'm sorry I never said goodbye. I had lost trac kof the live journal stuff and missed the announcemnt of the housewarming and the cancellation of it as well. I was wondering why I never got a call back when I called him on his birthday. Well. I guess this whole LJ thing is not really about saying goodbye, but really about saying thanks and here: I cherish this memeory of you, thank you for it. Sterno will live in my memory for a long long time. I hesitate to say forever, but that is the idea. RIP, my friend, may flights of angels carry you to your rest. -M Current Music: Ringing in my ears. | | Monday, April 10th, 2006 | | 4:42 pm |
Tokyo musings.
Well Kids, here I am IN Tokyo, wide awake at five am, jetlagged still and wondering about stuff. I got news yesterday that an old friend took his life with a cocktail of anti-freeze and tylenol. All I can say is: what the fuck? Current Music: static in my head | | Monday, March 20th, 2006 | | 6:52 am |
Another Monday Morning...
Well, here we are again, another Monday, though this time I'm writing from the relative comfort of my living room instead of the front seat of my car. I haven't hear from Sterno in awhile, I guess I should give him a shout this week. Anyways.... More memories, there seems to be no escape from them. I do remember the hallway at the Chez too. I thnik I had my own throwing knives for awhile there but the real capper was the compound bow. Nasty, but fun. Speaking of bow, was it Sternos brother that shot some guy in the front yard with a bow? Or was that the mensch_man's brother? Jeez, there were a number of homicidal brother stories floating around. I also remember well the double-bitted ax in the kitchen. I think it was Sterno who said "Every kitchen should have one" and I agree. I can't remember clearly, did it live next to the fridge by the wall, or behind the kitchen door? I'm thinking the kitchen door... I must say that in some way I'm glad that firearms never made an appearance there, for surely tragedy, (or hilarity, equally probable), would have followed... remember you can't spell slaughter with out laughter. Groovey formats, the menshch_man was an early adopter! (That was sudden topic change, were you wearing your safety belts?)Betamax and laser disc! Can he get any cool titles in those formats from Netflix? So Silver Sues had one of those crazy "video" games based on a laserdisc featuring a knight of some kind.. Pick up the flask. You cannot pick up the flask. No that's a different game... But this one was a goofy animated kind of thing, I think that Phoenix did pretty well playing that one. Funny though, I never remember Sterno playing video games. As to who the hell I am, I'll throw out a few clues and hopefully no one will spoil it by shouting out the answer before they sound their buzzer. I never slept at the Chez, though I did find myself there in the morning a few times. I was at both Sterno's and the mensch_man's wedding, though at one I was a guest and at the other I was being paid. I know how Phoenix' bedrroom in his folks house got to be that brown color. I accidentaly kicked Tigre' in the gut when he was hanging from a doorway at some party at the Chez. Wow, this morning's entry is a mess. Goes to show you how falling from the wagon can effect your thought process. And get your pants muddy. Current Mood: moodyCurrent Music: Fox News | | Monday, March 6th, 2006 | | 7:37 am |
Monday Morning, memories of Sterno..
Happy Monday to everyone still with us and following along with the story. I've been trying to shake a few more memories loose from the back of my head, it sounds a lot like a marble in a coffee can, but that's a different story..... Remember, the bulk of the 80s stands between me and those memories and that is a lot of bulk to try and get around to piece them together. It is hard to separate the old memories and stories from the "Original Chez" (tm) and of course the players in that particular psycodrama. Music brings a few good memories to mind. Who can every forget the almost fanatical devotion to Debra Harry? Though of course that may have been the MenschMan's particular obession, the posters on the wall were still a highlight. She was so young and blond back then, but weren't we all? And I remember watching some kind of movie or video there with some Blondie album playing as the soundtrack. It was much better than the actual soundtrack being the universal opinion. Speaking of watching video, in those days as I was starting out on my film career, I was very much taken with that new thing called MTV. Now MTV, for those of you younger than fourty or so, was a cable channel that played music videos way back in the day before "MTV's Road Rules" and rap artists version of music videos, but I digress... I was lucky enough to be introduced to DEVO, not just by sound but by images as well. Some foresighted individual was able to get their hands on some tape of DEVO's early videos... And those viewings there at the Chez shaped my vision for good or bad for years to come. I wonder, who was the "early adopter" of the video tape technology there at the Chez? I know also that the video sculpture wall was anothor one of those things that shaped my artistic vision for some time. Music seemed to be a constant back gound there and the influence of that music still shapes my taste today. Memories of Sterno....
Memories, nothing more than memories....not a eulogy, the old boy is with us for some time to come, no doubt. We come here not to bury Sterno but to drink, errr, praise him. Hmmm, I could stand a bit of squeeze about now, two weeks on the wagon and I've powerful thirst. Anyway, to the point of this: Back when I was a boy (I still am after all, Peter Pan has nothing on me.)I was a fringe player at the Chez, more of an observer really as I was an FOF, that is friend of a friend, but I was amazed at the girls who came through that place. What was it that attracted the likes of them? I hate to name names but I (blush) must name a few memorable ones: Nikki, Shawna, Jane.... pardon the spelling gaffes... there were others that survive in my addled mind as faces and brief memories. They were all interesting, in the same way Sterno is interesting. Unique, usually very smart (Smart alekey?)and challenging to get to know but worth the effort. What attected them to the boys of the Chez? Was it the booze, wild parties, sullen atmoshere? OK well sullen carpet anyway. I think that it was just the genreral nihilsm of the joint. Gotta run, we roll film in ten minutes and I gotta get ready. More later.... Current Mood: mischievousCurrent Music: Sirius Radio Shuffle | | Sunday, February 19th, 2006 | | 9:18 am |
Memories of Sterno...
Ahhh crap, where did Sterno enter my life? It seems like has has always been there, like my little toe or something, not much noticed until you drop something on it. I can't remember if I first met him through Auntie Em or through the Voyaguers or the SCA or fandom or what. Like I said, he just lurked in a corner of my shoe until stubbed on the coffe table. No wait, that was my toe, but you get the point. I can't seem to grab a thread and roll with it like some mensch can in his writing, but I'll dance this mess around for awhile and see where it goes. I remember nights at the Chez, writing my early college term papers on Sterno's Lisa in his tiny studio apartment above the El tracks, I remember sitting with H, J and Sterno in the IHOP till the wee hours drinking coffee and boysenberry syrup, (what's a boyesenberry anyways?) RonO, Menschman, Sterno and myself going to the Tien-Sein and ordering fifty (50) orders of poststickers. Doing shots of Jack Daniels from a Keg shot glass in front of the video wall at the Chez, a lobster in a bathtub, strange goings on in the bedrooms, a fire ax and a near fatal Bird wounding in the kitchen. Nobe's (Knobbies? knowbees? WTF?)computer store. Eating some Thanksgiving leftovers on Thanksgiving night while Tige's and Sterno's folks sneak off to the attic for some mind expanding time and finding that so very amusing. Archery practice at the Chez. Visiting Hain's parents house with Stern and our motorcycles. Packing Stern's large magazine collection in boxes and spending more time reading than packing.... Speaking of motorcycles, Sterno and I trying to jump start on of the bikes and having the jumper cables melt...I think that was behind his apartment near Ridge and Touhy. Sterno laughing at my old BSA because it had no electric start and the turn signals wouldn't work at idle. Whose big birthday party was that at Silver Sues? I guess it was the big Birds, but Sterno stands out in my mind that night, as well a Q-Bert and Crazy Climber. And the Conventions and the various Hi-Jinks and Shenanaigans. Blow up dolls left in the beds for housekeeping, World Con in Chicago and a whole week in the hotel. The first Windy (or was it Capri?) at the Holiday Inn, so close to home. The Purple Hyatt. Con Suite Sing A Longs. Too many fragmented memories and confused and hazy mental images to sort out. But how did Sterno get there in the first place? I cna't seem to nail that down.
